Nursing is one of the oldest and most respected careers available. Because of the nature and demand of the profession, nurses typically earn a competitive salary as well. The customary method to break into the nursing field is to enroll in a traditional four year nursing program; however, with so many online programs in various fields emerging, some may wonder if they can get an accelerated nursing degree online.
Are Accelerated Degrees in Nursing Available Online?
The answer to this question is complex. Accelerated degrees in nursing do exist, but there are requirements that a candidate must meet. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, accelerated nursing programs are available in 46 states and in 2012 there were 255 of these programs available. The first qualification is that you must already have a bachelor’s degree. These programs are called second degree programs and they generally last for 12 to 18 months. These candidates are typically those who are seeking a career change. These programs are rigorous and continuous and there are often no breaks available. Some programs even require students to give a written statement affirming that they will cease all employment for the duration of the program.
What Are The Requirements for Admission Into This Type of Program?
Candidates seeking an accelerated degree in nursing must also have completed the necessary prerequisites for entering most programs. Most applicants usually meet the mathematics and social sciences requirements, but some lack in the science areas. Advanced science courses are usually required including microbiology. In addition to the required prerequisites there is also a GPA requirement which varies between institutions. The general range of GPA’s accepted are usually between a 2.7 and 3.0. Again, this is just an average and you must contact your particular school of interest to inquire about their expectations.
Is There A Clinical Portion In These Programs?
Most of these programs require candidates to possess a CNA, Certified Nursing Assistant, certificate or have a RN, Registered Nurse, license in their particular state. These credentials are important, because the accelerated program is completed mostly online and nursing education understandably has both theoretical and clinical components. By being a CNA or RN a candidate will have completed the clinical aspect of their nursing degree, because they would have already gained experience in a healthcare setting. This does not mean that you will not have a clinical portion in the accelerated program. Most of these programs do require a short stint that is completely hands on.
